More about the Artist: 

Archie van der Ploeg is considered a highly collectible "Old Master" of Southern African and Namibian landscape art.

Dual Talents: Born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in 1939, Van der Ploeg was uniquely gifted. Before establishing himself fully as a painter, he actually spent roughly 20 years as a successful professional rock musician and lead guitarist in Johannesburg during the mid-20th century.

Artistic Beginnings: He showed immense natural talent early on, leaving school at 17 to pursue art. He studied briefly at the Johannesburg Technical Art College and was deeply inspired by the famous Dutch-South African landscape painter Tinus de Jongh. His mother, affectionately known as "Ma Van," famously supported his early career by traveling to sell his landscape oils to farmers across the Free State.

The Move to Namibia: In 1980, he moved permanently to Namibia (then SWA), where his art truly matured. He became spellbound by the desert, dedicating the rest of his life to capturing its stark, changing light and desolate beauty. He later co-founded the Reflections Artist’s Gallery and the Klippenberg Art Festival to support local artists.

Royal Recognition: His cultural significance in the region is immense; in fact, the Namibian Government officially commissioned a landscape from him to present as a state gift to Queen Elizabeth II during her royal visit in 1991.

Archie van der Ploeg passed away in Windhoek in 2002, leaving behind a legacy of beautifully atmospheric, "Romantic Realism" landscapes that remain highly sought after by regional collectors.
